Point65 Pro-X Open Class Surfski

The development of the Pro-X has been resting for more thana year due to other projects that have taken up our time. Since the testing of the prototye, a new improved plug has been made and we are planning to start production in the fall of 2007.

The Surfski's are the K1's of the Southern Hemisphere Oceans with roots from Coastal life saving. Countries like Australia, New Zealand and of course South Africa have long traditions of life-saving culture. They developed a craft that was capabale of paddling quickly through the surf (up to several meters high) and assist a surfer or swimmer in need, followed by a controlled surf back to the beach. These skis were very stable and their bow was of a hammerhead design to break surf and avoid forward loops when surfing the big stuff.
Life saving being a rather macho culture it was only a matter of time before the guys and girls started racing with them. And this pushed the boundries of design as well. Soon the skis became narower, longer and with less rocker....the result....extremely fast skis!


The Point65 Pro-X has been inspired by the fastest skis on the market. Those skis are rather unstable and difficult to handle in rough water conditions. The Pro-X has been calculated to be 7% slower but 12% more stable than other skis. The result is is a surfski which lets a strong paddler use more power in his or her paddling without having to focus too much on balancing. Even on the down wind stretches (surf from behind) this results in faster runs. This has been proven during testing of the Pro-X in the Weekly time trials in Hout-Bay, Cape Town.



We have adapted the ski with a small dayhatch in the front to stow a jacket and some power bars. When paddling in colder climates an extra setup with clothing could be good to have along. We also added a recess on the rear deck to strap a dry bag down if a longer trip is planned. The rudder pedals are adjustable to fit any paddler. It is the craft of choice for racing paddlers that are seeking to paddle long sessions on open water.

Surfski paddling is fun, safe and easy! You will fall in a few times, you will get wet (even if you don't fall in) but if you have the right equipmentl, it is no problem! The waters in Cape Town hardly reach over 11°C and falling in is no drama! It will only take 5 seconds to remount and paddle on. The cockpit is selfbailing and you just throw you leg over and put your bottom in the seat. Just make sure you have a paddle leash between you and the boat or between the paddle and you. While paddling you might want to have some neoprene shorts or long trousers on. For the rest the culture actually only allows a tank top.....but in colder climates a life vest should do. Perhaps with a thermic shirt under.
